It's taken me a fair amount of time to understand the work of Paul and Ilona Black, and it's only now that I'm starting to appreciate the liberating nature of their artistry. Emily is the perfect muse, willing to push boundaries just as far (if not further) than even her directors - as a trio, they work in perfect unison. It's work like that this that makes me proud to judge MetArt Films against the likes of 'La La Land' or 'Nocturnal Animals' or 'The Neon Demon'. It's not overly-kinky, but... 'Washed Away' is my favourite film from any MetSite this year. Aside from two tiny missteps with the score, it's actually a perfectly made film - an incredible accomplishment indeed.

J., since we last talked I've been thinking, and having now read this interview, I can't help but act and propose something to you. I think you've probably picked up on the fact that I'm a film fanatic, well... I've been developing two concepts/story outlines for some time now - one I think you'd take particular interest in.

The concept of the film is derived from Alis Locanta's Anthology Collection, The Heat; takes it's name and further inspiration from a particularly "bad" Lady Gaga song; and is stylistically intended to play out (fittingly, hence the reason I ask YOU) as a Malick-esque Music Video with influences from works of Nolan, Winding-Refn and Jared Leto.

Thanks for taking the time to reply J, especially at such length :) I love your philosophy and approach to work, I think it's such a positive and selfless way to operate. Thanks also for the explanation behind the technical decisions you made. I definitely see the rationale behind the score and the shower, but I'm still torn. If the water came out super cold and "snapped" Lorena out of her emotions, sure, but I'm not entirely convinced a lovely warm hot shower would have that same effect? I still think thought would drift. Anyway I guess I'll have to see what happens tonight when I shower. And yes, as you can see I'm a nitpicky perfectionist... and it annoys me too ;)

I rarely swear but for the purpose of impact when I do, and here it seems entirely necessary – this film is fucking beautiful!

Your camerawork, particularly your (low) angles, combined with your editing have an incredibly astute erotic sensibility to them. I’ve said it before, but I share your deep love of a female’s ass, legs and feet, and also of the fashionable attire that compliments their beauty – and you’re one of the select few directors prepared to not only shoot, but truly spotlight them, and for that I thank you!. Given that you’re just starting out too, I think it’s clear everything’s coming from a 100% instinctual basis, to which I’d say, “just keep it rolling”.

If I can give some feedback with regard to the things I’ve spoken of above however, it’s to remember that emotion is in the eyes. The setup of this film had a wonderful sense of psychology and emotion to it, which unfortunately became a little lost in the body of this piece – it was still there, but with a little more consideration for the eyes, it could have been something quite transcendent. If you have the time, I’d recommend taking a look at Alis Locanta’s ‘Memento – Second Act’. There is a shot of Lola Reve as she bids farewell to Mango – you’ll know the shot when you see it – which perfectly conveys what I’m trying to say. The entire essence of Lola and Mango’s relationship is conveyed through Lola’s eyes.

Also on the topic, I’d have liked to see that melancholic score drift away, rather than abruptly (and somewhat awkwardly) cut away. That score gave insight into Lorena’s emotional state and I think thematically, having it drift and slowly soften into nothingness would have better denoted those gloomy emotions being “washed away”. I think for thematic purpose also, there definitely shouldn’t have been a reprise of that score at the end – echoes of Lorena’s orgasm and the continuous flow of water, set against a close up of her smile and “smiling” eyes, would have again been much more appropriate to story and theme.

Additionally, I want to praise you as the director of Lorena, but more so Lorena herself. A performance such as this is impeccably rare and to achieve such quietness, such subtly and authenticity takes bravery and very real connection to spirit and self. I honestly think any young/aspiring/upcoming, even some of our more practiced erotic actresses should be watching this film and studying and learning from Lorena’s performance.

Lastly. I want to say that you’re the most exciting thing to happen to MetArt films since Alis Locanta – and given that he’s the director for which I have the greatest respect and affinity, that truly is saying something! I also want to encourage you to continue to deliver beautiful work, and to collaborate as closely and as often as possible with Lorena. She’s one of our best erotic actresses and your bond and level of comfort with each other comes through on screen, in your films, and has a significant impact on why they truly work and standout.

P.S. I think you and Tracy Lindsay would also work wonderfully together :) Also. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to write and learn in this process :)

I just wanted to introduce myself and say that this is really great! :) I can tell that you're still an upstart, and that you don't have all the gear, and production and support that our SexArt or VivThomas teams have; but what you've shown here is really promising! You and Katherine have delivered a luxurious and authentically erotic experience.

I love your considered angles and positioning, and the way you concentrate on typically fetishised body parts in your close ups (boobs, bum, hands, feet), and I loved the heels too. I feel as though you've got a great sense of fashion/style and I'd love to see that conveyed (and even become a centre-point) in your films :) I'd also love to see some panning shots, because much of the film was a collection of (well-edited) stills. A little more artistically driven narrative would also go a long way! Lastly, at times, the natural light coming through the window was a little harsh and washed out Katherine in the foreground, maybe a longer lens? or different angles?

So, just a few little things to critique, but it's great overall. I really think you're a director to watch Alana :) I hope we see lots of development from you, and I also hope you will work with Katherine again, cause she's a stunner :)

Thanks for complimenting my camera work. I just try to be at the service of the model in the hope of bringing her the best way possible. I have to confess being in the shower with L. was quite a challenge (not only for concentration ☺ ) but also to bring diversity and try to not being soaked with water, including equipment !
But probably, my style is not for everybody and I’m ready for critics. As you may notice, for MA, I tried to offer a different way of filming. I give myself more freedom in TLE settings. We’ll see in the future how I can evolve.
For the rest, I agree with you about emotion, eye contact and acting performance. It’s not for everybody and it’s our job as director to put the models in situation where they look great and use their ability to convey emotion but within their boundaries and/or capabilities, so they don’t look out of place. I shoot with the idea that I work for the model. Not the opposite.
It was very nice to try this “emotional” part with L.
About the score, my intention was to have a cut as the water flows because, in my mind, getting wet is a one way action. As soon L. was deciding to ”clean” her mind, the score was away. But my mistake was to bring back the score at the end.
Keeping the emotional load along the video is also a challenge. It’s difficult to please the majority and for some people, too much storyline can convey a less “visual” erotic. I’m still convinced that erotic is everywhere in the woman as soon as the same woman can carry the erotic load. Once again, we’ll see in the future with other model how I can try to bring this emotional / erotic load.
I can’t accept the comparison with Alis . But thanks anyway.
Tracy is definitely on top of my model wish-list. Beside being gorgeous, she’s really great in acting and perfectly resumes my emotional/erotic load topic.
