J Zakari: interview with a new artist at The Life Erotic

It’s rare for us to feature an artist who is so new to the MetArt Network, but in the case of director J Zakari, I had to make an exception. This talented artist has made a huge impression with just three movies to date – two here on The Life Erotic and one on MetArt. JZ: Spaceship Earth.

What’s your background in photography and film?

JZ: Director of music videos, producer and director of commercial ads.

For how long have you been creating erotica, and what inspired you to get into it?

JZ: Not for very long, since I shot my first two videos for MetArt in 2015 and my first two videos for TLE at the beginning of 2016. And why? That’s a good question. The will to do something else, the temptation to follow a path that is hardly ever taken in my country. Women’s beauty deserves to be photographed and filmed every single second. As I am a rather shy person, I had a personal motivation, a personal challenge to overcome.

Does mainstream art, cinema and photography influence you?

JZ: I think so. I am a big fan of American imagery. The road movie is a concept that I will certainly use in my future projects. I also admire the work of the late Marc Lagrange (sadly he passed away at the end of last year). His black and white/sepia work is amazing. David LaChapelle, Mario Testino (fashion is sexy), Jonas Akerlund, Michael Mann, Christopher Nolan… I could fill a book. The question is how to use this inspiration in erotic films. Not easy. One day, I’d like to be able to make erotic music videos. I find a lot of inspiration in music.

Can you tell us about the movies you made with Lorena?

JZ: These films are experiments. I search. I try not to copy. Of course, working with a model as professional, charming and adaptable as Lorena is something very unique. I also try to change the visual style depending on the site: a more fluid style for MetArt, and for TLE I played with the hand-held camera to bring the viewer as close as possible to Lorena. My work needs to evolve, to diversify.   

Do you prefer shooting in a studio or on location?

JZ: The studio offers a level of comfort and control – of the light in particular – which you don’t always get with a natural setting. But a natural setting can offer more diversity. So let’s adapt. If I had to choose, I’d like to shoot in the US. There, you find an accepted eccentricity and a boldness, which attracts me visually, in addition to the diversity of the landscapes. The US is like an open-air studio. 

Is there a video you are particularly proud of?

JZ: I am just starting… let’s wait a bit before ranking them!

Do you prefer making films or taking photographs?

JZ: Definitely film because photography is a medium I am learning about and I am impressed by the technical knowledge it requires. I think we can be closer and more authentic in films than in photographs. If the model is comfortable with the film camera, you can create a dialogue with her and when it happens, it’s beautiful. It is very beautiful to capture emotion on a still but it’s even better if you can see it coming: evolve, live and disappear. I think film is more complicated for the model. It’s more risky. Editing is also a big part of film, and I know it’s a subject that triggers a lot of passionate debate in the comments.

TLE is moving more towards soft kink. Is it a theme that inspires you?

JZ: I guess so. I think “Jewels” on TLE is a bit kinky. Having said that, you shouldn’t shoot kink just because it is fashionable. Fantasies about domination/submission are very interesting things to explore, to stage. Let’s try to respect the woman’s desires and be a catalyst for those desires rather than play God.

 Which model inspires you the most?

JZ: There are many: Tracy Lindsay, Tracy Lindsay, Tracy Lindsay… her ability to act attracts me a lot, besides the fact that she is exceptionally beautiful. Michaela Isizzu, Candice B, Dido A, Melena A are also remarkable. But there are also lots of women who only pose for photo shoots and who I’d be so keen on filming one day. JZ: Confidence for confidence. I shot Tenaka (upcoming on MetArt) twice because I was not happy with the first film. Let’s say that there is a certain result I’m trying to get although I know I won’t get it 100 percent because I am too demanding. Let’s face it; to make a high quality film costs a lot of money so you need to keep a realistic approach and plan. Then, you need to let the model express herself. My focus has always been on the model’s participation. Lorena’s experience was an advantage and I used it.

What are your ambitions with TLE and MetArt?

JZ: The MetArt Network sets the benchmark. Erotism/porn is all over the net. Among this abundance of content, which is sometimes hard to digest, it is pleasant to film for an established network, where quality is required, where beauty comes first, where the woman is glorified. I hope to go as far as possible, and one day to shoot for Viv Thomas too – I really like the visual style, which they have been developing for the last twelve months. My biggest challenge is to combine my work as a producer and my new role as a director of erotic films. But I’ve already made my choice for the future.

What would you like the viewers to get from your films?

JZ: We – the directors, the photographers – are only messengers, intermediaries, handing over the gift of the beauty of those stunning models to an audience of experts. Let’s hope that my messages are appreciated. I would like a bit of compassion as well because nobody is perfect. It’s impossible to please everyone. I think we all try to do our best to deliver quality films and photos.

Charles Lightfoot: interview with a TLE artist

Photographer and filmmaker Charles Lightfoot only made his debut at The Life Erotic in April 2016, but he is far from new to the world of erotica. Based in California – where he finds the most beautiful and inspiring models – he has over twenty years of experience and an impressive pedigree as a colleague of the late, great J. Stephen Hicks, among other notable collaborators.

Lightfoot’s use of natural light and shade, and his refusal to go down the well-trodden, clichéd ‘glamor’ path, has polarized opinion among members of our sister site MetArt; but he’s okay with that. Despite his accomplished body of work, he is refreshingly humble and eager to listen to feedback. And his two movies to date here on TLE have showcased a more edgy aspect to his work. Charles, where are you from?

CL: I was born in Rabat, Morocco and traveled extensively with my parents. Not military but my dad had a business of the month and got restless very quickly. 

What is your background in photography and film?

CL: My parents owned a motel and a motel guest unable to pay his rent left his camera as payment and never returned. I started photography around 12 years old and eventually attended Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. I started working with Stephen Hicks in 1994 and continue to this day producing content for his site. After Brooks Institute I interned at Playboy in Santa Monica, CA and then worked with Suze Randall a while, and ended up clicking with Stephen. He was such a laid back dude and created a wonderful work environment. We all geeked out photographically and all had the same outlook on treating the models with respect. I still miss the dude for sure...

What inspired you to start creating erotica?

CL: I started shooting nudes because I was shy and I think it was a way for me to hide behind a camera to meet girls… The camera allowed me to go places and meet people I normally would never do. I fell in love with the mechanical device itself – the camera – and then with the technical aspect and science of it all, and now it’s purely a search of finding a moment in an expression…

Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography?

CL: I used to look at fashion magazines and then went through a museum phase and now that I’m answering this question it’s been a while since I’ve been inspired by something… I definitely think a trip to the Getty Museum is in order.

You make a lot of use of natural light and real locations – please tell us about that.

CL: It feels more natural to look through a viewfinder and see what you’re getting than using strobes. Nothing wrong with strobes, I have them but have not used them in years. With the low light sensitivity of digital cameras it has opened up a whole new world that was never possible before. I used to love the look of Tri-X film back in the day, the grain gave the image a quality that was raw; unfortunately a lot of people look at it as a mistake as opposed to an effect. I’ve not abandoned the technical aspect but it’s definitely on the back burner, and I just focus on creating a feeling in the subject. I don’t always succeed, but I always try...

Is there a photoset or video you are particularly proud of?

CL: Not really… I love the process of shooting, then I love to edit, but unfortunately I could probably edit all my work down to one image and still find something wrong with it. But the process is what I love… 

Do you prefer shooting movies or photographs?

CL: Hmm. I think in the last few years I’ve enjoyed shooting movies more, I just wish I was better at it… I get blown away by some of the videos out there… 

Is there a model who inspires you the most?

CL: When I was in school I would inevitably find a girl, a model who had the same passion as me, and we would shoot assignment after assignment for a time. Then I would move on to another… It was a real creative adventure with no thoughts of making money or if anyone would like it. Those models were the most inspiring… these days I’m inspired if the model shows up on time and has a good attitude!

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?

CL: It depends on the client, but most cases it’s on the fly and letting the creativity happen, never forcing something… I definitely have music playing, sometimes the model’s choice and sometimes mine. It’s really important to make the model feel relaxed, comfortable, safe and happy to be there. A lot of these girls get treated like objects, especially in this industry, and that’s fucked up… I never want to be part of that.

What are your ambitions for your work with the MetArt Network?

CL: I’m not sure? I’m just happy I have a place that will buy my images and allow me to survive in this society doing what I love doing. I’m not an ambitious person… I don’t need much to be content.

What do you hope the viewers get from your movies and photos?

CL: Reading the comments, it’s clear that some viewers get me and others don’t, and that’s totally cool… I just hope most can see these beautiful girls in the prime of their lives, and appreciate their bodies with respect – and masturbating to the imagery is a form of appreciation… why not?

Kinky is the new normal

Here at The Life Erotic we like to celebrate the edgier side of arousal – and it seems we’re not alone. A recent study from the University of Montreal, published in the Journal of Sex Research, suggests that almost half of us have sexual fantasies that are considered ‘deviant’ or ‘atypical’ under current psychiatric criteria.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) – the principal reference book of psychiatric diagnosis – categorizes sexual behavior as normophilic (normal) or paraphilic (‘deviant’ or ‘anomalous’). Of the 1,040 Canadians of both sexes questioned for the study, 45.5 percent said they were interested in at least one behavior considered paraphilic, and 33 percent said they had acted out these fantasies.

The most popular ‘deviant’ behavior was voyeurism (35 percent), with 26 percent saying they enjoyed fetishism, the same number going for frotteurism, and 19 percent saying they were masochistic.

Results were similar for men and women. According to the study’s lead author, Professor Christian Joyal, “Women who report an interest in sexual submission have more varied sexual interests and report greater satisfaction with their sex lives. Sexual submission is therefore not an abnormal interest.”

So are ‘normal’ people are a lot kinkier than previously thought? In statistical parlance, a trait found in less than 16 per cent of the population is considered atypical. But with as many as 60 percent of respondents indicating interest in certain sexual behaviors (the percentage of men with an interest in voyeurism), they can’t be considered abnormal. “People want to be tied up,” said Professor Joyal. “As long as it’s with a consenting partner, people will be relieved to know that their desires are not necessarily abnormal…. One hundred years ago, oral sex was considered gross, 50 years ago it was illegal and now it is the number one fantasy. In 30 years from now, I would be surprised if BDSM wasn’t part of normal sexuality.”

It’s to be hoped that the results of this study will help challenge what is perceived as ‘deviant’ tastes – especially since so many of apparently share them! Let’s hope this will encourage recognition and acceptance of the diversity of sexual preferences.

What do you like about your appearance?

Albert, where are you from?

AV: My great-grandfather lived in Germany, he was quite a wealthy person and a traveler. He enjoyed hunting and he kept a diary with illustrations. I guess because of his curious nature he came to Russia, where he got married and had eight daughters; one of them was my grandmother. Since then my family has lived in Russia. I was born in Moscow and I travel a lot. I think it’s in my genes from my great-grandfather.

What is your background in photography?

AV: Another passion of mine, aside from traveling, is painting and modern arts and crafts. I love new materials and technologies. One day I discovered digital photography. Before the digital era I shot on film and it didn’t excite me, it was more documentary-style shots. But with digital technology everything was taken to another level and I began to experiment, first with themes, then with color. I had a lot of models who wanted to see themselves outside the frames of their everyday life. Slowly my photographs became more and more erotic, so it happened quite gradually.

How long have you been creating erotic photographs, and what inspired you to start?

AV: During one of my trips to Prague I visited Saudek’s exhibition. I think it was in 2006, and back then I felt like Prague was full of electric erotic impulses. I brought back a lot of albums of erotic photography from that trip, as well as publications from Taschen with daguerreotypes, photos of Playboy models, Helmut Newton’s album, I studied them all.

 Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography?

AV: I like elements of cinema in photographs, I like Fellini’s absurd, Tarkovsky’s frames. I also like open eroticism with notes of humor, like we see in Tinto Brass’ work. I was also quite inspired, like many others, by Zalman King’s ‘Wild Orchid.’ As for books, I read constantly, I like Borges, books with a mysterious storyline, philosophical literature. But philosophy, if you read it at night, is also a good sleeping pill. In painting, I love color and expression; in some of my photo shoots with models I have used my own paintings as the background.

You have been shooting for the MetArt Network since 2010; how do you think your work has evolved?

AV: As much as I can judge my own work – in 2010 it was a hobby, but now it grabs me almost completely. I try to capture the feeling of the present moment, immediacy, as if the viewer can reach out and touch the model’s shoulder.

Is there a photoset you are particularly proud of?

AV: It’s hard for me to say. In all honesty, I like all my photosets, especially those that haven’t been published yet.

You have shot many of our new MetArt models in their ‘presenting’ photoset. What makes a good model?

AV: I love working with debutantes. It has a certain drive, it’s like opening a new book of poetry, or coming to a new city, where you’ve never been before. I pay attention to the temperament of the model, her grace, her movements, her sweet face. Her smile is very important for me. A good model has all these qualities. Another important thing is the model’s desire to present herself at her best: her excitement, her mood, her young spirit. This is what, in my opinion, makes the model interesting for the viewer.

Is there a model who inspires you the most?

AV: This is another difficult question. Of course there are models with whom I work very comfortably and we have fun. Not all girls are the same, some are quite chatty, laughing a lot, some are quite dreamy. For example Veselin is very lively and fun and it shows in her pictures, and Sigrid is more shy. But of course I love to work with them both. There are models that have become my friends, such as Subil A, who first posed for me and then decided to continue her career as a model.

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?

AV: I plan my shoots, I try to think all the details through. I think that’s what makes the work easy. It doesn’t always turn out as I plan; sometimes shoots get cancelled, sometimes the weather interferes, or accidents happen – that’s life.

How about shooting movies?

AV: Most often I work with debutantes – non-professional models – and working with a video requires a model who has more self-control than for a photo shoot. Moreover, often models get shy in front of the video camera. But I do shoot videos when I meet models who enjoy it.

What are your ambitions for your work with the MetArt Network?

AV: My ambition is to continue being at the top, to bring a lot of exciting new models, and to publish on Errotica Archives. Perhaps I would like to release an album with Taschen or Goliath. I would also like to do a photo exhibition, perhaps with other artists from MetArt, I think it’s an interesting idea.

What do you hope the viewers get from your photos?

AV: I want to give the audience the intimate world that surrounds our favorite models. I am happy if I can convey their beauty, youth and playfulness.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

AV: I like that the audience is very large and each participant can look at my work.I always read the comments and I like controversy, I like the fact that my work pleases subscribers. Being popular is a damn good feeling. I particularly pay attention to the negative comments, and I am grateful for reasoning and specifications, because if I know the specific flaws, I can fix them in the future. We live in a big world, in different countries, with different traditions. NT: Yes, for sure.



Do you prefer studio or location shoots?

NT: I don’t mind either. It’s not that important to me. Of course it’s more comfortable to shoot in the studio or an apartment, but fresh air is also nice.

NT: I don't think so, it’s hard to answer that.

Do you prefer shooting movies or photographs?

NT: Shooting movies. But photography is a basic skill for any filmmaker.

My Sexy Movie of the Year

The New Year is an ideal time for looking back as well as forward, reflecting on what’s been especially hot over the past twelve months and anticipating what’s to come in the future. Higinio Domingo has excelled at capturing this exciting new direction, and his movie “Rope Fetish,” starring adorable Mira V, is the first one I want to single out as having particularly held my attention. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d highly recommend checking it out.

But my absolute number one movie of the year has to be maverick auteur Paul Black’s comedy-horror Halloween spectacular “Scarecrow.” I'll freely admit to being entirely subjective when it comes to Black’s work; his dark humor and unique take on eroticism blow my mind every time. “Scarecrow” is quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and while it won’t appeal to everyone, if you like to be challenged, enthralled and flabbergasted in equal measure you may become as much of a superfan as I am!

Sam Bruno: interview with a TLE artist

Sam Bruno is a master of the unexpected. His photographs and films for The Life Erotic are set in some of the most unusual locations we’ve seen – everything from a recording studio to an auto shop. Sam, where are you from, and what is your background in photography and film?

SB: I am from the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live today. My skills are largely self-taught, beginning with photography back in the mid seventies, audio engineering in the eighties, and video in the nineties. I learned from books, magazines, manuals, and watching others work. I bought some gear and gave myself time to learn it.

How long have you been creating erotic photographs and movies, and what inspired you to start?

SB: Since the seventies, photography has been more of a hobby than a profession. I shot mostly for myself and picked up a few gigs shooting concerts, bands, and products. I got serious about photography in 2000. I didn’t know what I wanted to shoot so I looked over my old work and found a portrait of a classmate I had done in high school. Her name was Kelly and she was so pretty. I decided to start shooting portraits. I found I liked shooting people but then discovered I liked shooting women even more. I’d always liked pin-up photography and in 2004 I did my first nude shoot with Gwen Taylor, a local nude-fetish-alt model. It was a gradual progression from portraits to nude to erotic. I get a lot more artistic satisfaction from doing erotic photography than I have with any other style of photography I’ve done. It never gets boring and it’s always fun.

You have been shooting photosets and movies for TLE for about three years now – how do you think your style has evolved since then?

SB: I’m more confident. Stills and lighting were never a problem. I used to shoot each video like a fiction film with multiple takes and incidental shots. That created an editing nightmare with tons of continuity problems. Today, I use different production techniques that make post-production easier. I also have more experience directing the model and creating an environment to allow her to give her best performance.

Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography?

SB: The biggest influence on my work is from other photographers such as Craig Morey, Steve Diet Goedde, Bob Carlos Clarke, Helmut Newton, Tony Ward, Bob Guccione, and Richard Avedon. I like Morey, Goedde, Clarke, Newton, and Ward for their black and white work and use of contrast and grain. I like Avedon for his artistic approach but Bob Guccione’s work from the seventies was inspiring. His work was visceral, erotic, perverse, sophisticated, and always high in quality.

You have shot in several unusual locations for TLE – what challenges does this present? How does it inspire you?

SB: I enjoy shooting on location because of the lack of control compared to shooting in a studio. I like creating a visual set with the juxtaposition of a beautiful model masturbating in an unlikely place. It’s fun and creatively challenging to work with limitations. Audio is usually the problem. It’s so critical to capture the sounds of the model because it will elevate the eroticism of the video. I’ve had to deal with airplanes, trains, trucks, motorcycles, and a roll-up door that sounded like thunder when the wind would blow.

Please tell us about ‘Wine Thief,’ the movie you shot with Avri Norwood.

SB: ‘Wine Thief’ is one of five films we made in one day. It was the last one we shot. Avri was down for making five videos but it was an exhausting 12-hour day. The idea for shooting in a winery came from my PA, Brian. He thought it would be hot to use the wine thief – a device to sample wine from a barrel – as a dildo. I needed to make sure it was safe and wouldn’t break during use or cause an infection. I like to run a very safe set. Brian and I decided to shoot in the warehouse. We set up a couple of barrels and a couple of lights to the side to create the shadows and contrast. We shot the entire video in one take. I gave Avri a bit of direction and cut her loose. We were going to shoot a setup scene with Avri sampling the wine from a barrel but we were tired from the long shooting day and decided to skip it. Her orgasm was so real. Is there a photoset or video you are particularly proud of?

SB: Photographs. They’re easier and the gratification is faster and I don’t have to work with audio. It’s the audio – whether it’s dialog, ambient sound, or music – that makes post-production more difficult. I enjoy doing it but sometimes it’s nice to just make photographs.

TLE is moving more towards ‘soft kink’ – is this a subject that inspires you?

SB: Yes. ‘The Dark Room’ fits the soft kink description. It featured Azura Starr as a kidnap victim forced to masturbate for an unseen voyeur. I’m looking forward to making more films with a dark theme.

Is there a model who inspires you the most?

SB: There are two. The first one is Apnea. She is a nude-goth-alt model and has been featured on SuicideGirls, GodsGirls, and other similar websites. In March 2015, I had the honor of working with her again. She was passing through town and remembered me. We had a good shoot and had a chance to catch up on things and people we knew. Apnea has a special quality about her that makes me do my best work. Either that or I’m still star-struck. The other model is Azura Starr because we got along so well. She is also incredibly talented and beautiful. We shot six films and I’d love to do more but unfortunately she is no longer in the business.

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?

SB: I don’t plan every last detail. I have a few ideas on character, wardrobe and lighting, but I like to let things happen organically when we’re on set. I talk to the model and crew during pre-production so everyone knows what we’re doing and to avoid bad surprises. It’s a collaboration between the model, myself, and the production assistant. The most important thing is to cast the right model. A model that is professional, resilient, cool, and can take direction will make the shoot successful.

What are your ambitions for your work with TLE?

SB: I have a few. I’d like to do a TLE branded photography workshop someday. Basically, it would show how a TLE-style video and photo shoot is done. We’d cover conceptualizing, casting, location scouting, equipment, lighting, directing the cast and crew, and post-production. I think this would a great way to connect with the members and build the TLE brand. No other similar web brand is doing this. I’d like to shoot some videos with big toys. I think the positive response to ‘Wine Thief’ has shown the members want to see that. Plus it’s totally hot. I’d like to bring a little ethnic diversity to the TLE catalog. I shot a couple of videos with an Indian model, Maya Virdi, with a generally positive response. I’m curious to see the member reaction to other types of models. Finally, I’d like to be one of the featured photographers in the MetArt family with my own branded website showcasing my work. That’s all!

What do you hope the viewers get from your movies and photos?

SB: I hope they enjoy the movies and photos and fall in love with the model.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

SB: I have a number of films that are shot but not posted yet. I have four more films featuring Avri Norwood. I have two films with the beautiful/nasty redhead Pepper Kester, and six films with a pair of tall brunettes from Florida. All this will be coming soon. I want to thank TLE for giving me my big break in the industry. Prior to TLE, I was in the process of launching a website showcasing my work. Unfortunately, this did not work out. I wanted to get my work out there but didn’t want to handle the web side of the business. Then I found TLE. The TLE style matched my own and it was a good fit. TLE is the exclusive home for my work. I don’t shoot for anyone else. I have a great relationship with TLE and feel a sense of loyalty to them. I’ve heard I’m the only American director (or one of the few) in the TLE roster. It’s an honor to be associated with such a great company. I’m looking forward to many years of producing new and exciting content for TLE and the new soft kink direction.

SS: I find it difficult to answer this question; I was born in one country, raised in another, and work in many countries. I like to move around the world and observe what is happening everywhere.

SS: A few years ago I decided to change my life and it seemed to me that it was a good idea to work in the adult industry as a photographer. Many people tried to dissuade me, and they don’t understand why I chose erotic photography, but we all know – it’s cool!

SS: Now I’m curious to experiment with some themes and montages. Nothing specific that I can tell you, but you will certainly soon notice a change in my movies.

Please tell us about the series ‘My Truth’ that you shot with director Charles Lakante for The Life Erotic. Did you enjoy playing the character?

A: Yes, it was a very unusual experience; I had to show my inner feelings with my body and facial expressions, it was almost an acting job! I love projects like this.

Do you have a high sex drive?

A: Yes, very high and it gets higher with every new project.

Did you ever have sex with a girl in your personal life?

A: No, I’m not bisexual. I adore the beauty of the female body, I really love watching it live and in pictures, but it ends there. I prefer men. I like alternating hard and soft sex, I like kissing and butt slapping.

What turns you on?

Xanthus: interview with a TLE artist

There are artists who have a recognizable signature style, and then there are artists who choose to constantly innovate, surprising us with the variety and versatility of their work. Xanthus falls into the latter category; over the past three years, he has brought us everything from highly stylized experiments with color and light to naturalistic stories that focus on the chemistry between his models. He seems to have a particular talent for suiting the theme to the personality of the girl he is shooting, having edgy Jennet spray graffiti in a derelict building, and Joselina Joker play sexy games with candlewax and rope. Today’s new movie, ‘As Silk,’ introduces an appealing new model, Nicolette A, and lets her explore her body at her own teasing pace. It’s the perfect cue to find out a little more about this intriguing artist…

Xanthus, where are you from?

X: Northern Europe.

What is your background in photography and film?

X: I’ve liked it since I was a teenager. At every family birthday or relative’s wedding I was taking pictures or shooting videos. I have an older cousin who was also passionate about photography and I think I was inspired by him. 

How long have you been creating erotic photographs and movies?

X: I think it’s around seven years now. It’s a funny story, I was working in a real estate office at the time and one of my female colleagues asked me to take nude pictures of her in the office after work. She had a lover in another country (she was married to another guy and still is) and she wanted to send him some pictures, and I was the only guy in the office with a camera. So I stayed after work and took some naked pictures of her. I was pretty nervous about my first nude shoot, but surprisingly the pictures weren’t bad, and she was pretty happy with the result. I also enjoyed the shoot so I started to learn more about nude photography and shooting models. 

You have been shooting photosets and movies for TLE for over three years now – how do you think your style has evolved since then?

X: For the better, I hope! With every new production we try to make it better than the previous one. Of course we don’t always get the result we were planning to, because there are so many things that can affect production, especially on erotic shoots. 

Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography?

X: My biggest inspiration comes from music videos. My favorite artist is Rihanna, I think she has the best music videos. ‘Where Have You Been’ is my top music video, I think I have watched that video 100 times or more. When I don’t have any new ideas about what to shoot I just watch the latest music videos on YouTube or Vimeo and I almost always find some new ideas for my productions.

You have shot several movies in domestic locations, such as on top of the washing machine or in the kitchen (‘Sweet Darkness’). Is this a theme that inspires you?

X: Ha ha, no not really! Sometimes I go to productions with no idea what we are going to shoot, and then usually at the last moment I get a lot of crazy ideas in my mind. Of course, not all of them are accepted by the models, and sometimes they just call me stupid and are shocked at how I can even have something like that in my mind! But in the end we usually compromise.

Is there a photoset or video you are particularly proud of?

X: It’s a hard question. When I am editing a video, I am very proud of it, it looks perfect to me, but after it’s published and I watch it again after some time, I start to think about how many things could be done better. So I hope my best production is still to come.

Do you prefer shooting movies or photographs?

X: Definitely movies. It’s harder to do technically than pictures, but in movies you have many more options for how you can communicate with the viewer. You can work with sound, editing, camera movements, it’s more interesting to me than pictures. Actually my dream is to go to LA and learn cinematography like the big boys are doing it. 

TLE is moving more towards ‘soft kink’ – is this a subject that inspires you?

X: Yes, I like the new style of TLE. I like kinky! It’s very hard to find a good model for it, any girl can masturbate but not any girl can do it so you see it on your screen. Almost all of my models are beginners, girls next door. So I spend a lot of time and sometimes it’s quite stressful having to teach them how to act in front of the camera. I try not to yell but sometimes it’s the only way to get the reaction I want to see from them (yes I know, I’m a bad person)!

Is there a model who inspires you the most?

X: No not really – every model has something different that I like about her. But Michaela Isizzu is one model I really want to work with, I hope some day I will do a really good production with her for TLE members. 

Do you prefer to shoot solo or girl-girl movies?

X: Girl-girl, it’s much easier to think of new ideas with two girls, and it’s more fun for the girls also; and I think members would also like to see girl-girl movies more often on TLE.

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?

X: Sometimes I plan every detail about the production, and sometimes I just go to the location and see what happens! I usually choose the music after I see what we have on camera; finding good music is a big problem, it takes a lot of time because you have to listen to a lot of songs until you find the one you like best for the movie.

What are your ambitions for your work with TLE?

X: That’s easy, to be Number One!

What do you hope the viewers get from your movies and photos?

X: I hope they get what are they looking for, of course it’s impossible to be liked by everyone, as everyone has different taste in models, the mood they like, the location they prefer – but I think that’s why the MetArt Network has a variety of sites, so everyone can find what they like best.

Higinio Domingo: interview with a TLE artist

Higinio Domingo is an artist who is never content to rest on his laurels. He continually strives to surprise and engage the viewer with fresh ideas, intriguing locations and clever new ways of conveying female sensuality. It’s fitting that he was one of the artists to usher in a new era of alluring, somewhat kinky sex play at TLE recently, with his stunning movie ‘Deep Dreams,’ which explored the darker side of Mira V’s subliminal fantasies.

One of Domingo’s visual trademarks (although by no means his only style) is the contrast between harsh, derelict, broken-down buildings, and the softness of his beautiful models. It’s something that has provoked plenty of debate here at TLE, making him one of our most talked-about artists! I was delighted to have the opportunity to ask him about his erotic work…

Higinio, where are you from?

HD: I’m from Eastern Europe. 

How long have you been creating erotic photographs and movies, and what inspired you to start? 

HD: I’ve been shooting photos and videos for eight years now. My inspiration was photography. First of all, I started taking photos for families and then I did my first nude project, which I liked very much. Then I did many photo sessions with many girls and I realized that I wanted to continue this.

Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography? 

HD: I’m not influenced by any art or film, but I get inspired by famous photographers and their sites. I find many good pictures with brilliant ideas on Tumblr too.

You have been shooting photosets and movies for TLE for over three years now – how do you think your style has evolved since then? 

HD: Over these three years I have learned to pay attention to all the nuances of how the girl looks in the picture, what feelings and expressions she conveys, if the make-up looks good, if the lights are intimate enough for the scene. 

Do you prefer studio or location shoots? What attracts you about the derelict locations you specialize in shooting? 

HD: I usually shoot in the studio, where I have seven different interiors. But I also like to shoot outdoors – in the forest, near stations, aerodromes and parks. If I can make a really good background in the studio, then I stay there, but if I have found a great spot that could fit perfectly with the shoot, and the model likes it, then we shoot there. The derelict locations have that magic. In our country there are very beautiful, natural locations, which certainly should be used in these projects. 

Is there a photoset or video you are particularly proud of? 

HD: I really like what I do and if people assess my work, then I am proud of that. Everyone has a right to judge or appreciate.  

Do you prefer shooting movies or photographs? 

HD: I like to do both, but with photography I can catch great moments, when the model looks so beautiful and seductive.

TLE is moving more towards ‘soft kink’ – is this a subject that inspires you? 

HD: This is something new for me, which I would love to make. I say ‘Yes’ to new ideas, because new things make the world spin around. 

Please tell us about ‘Deep Dreams,’ the movie you shot with Mira V.

HD: I found a great spot three days before shooting, in a very strange place, and at that moment I knew that it was a great spot for TLE’s new style of video. Mira is a really good model and she inspires me to do amazing things.

Is there a model who inspires you the most?

HD: Yes, my model Laura. I’ve been working with her for almost a year and every time when I meet her, it is always like the first time! We can chat for hours. We are thinking about new spots for shoots and what we will do there. I can depend on her.    

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?  

HD: I’m always planning work, and I schedule my shoots. But sometimes I have spontaneous ideas, which I want to realize that same day.

What are your ambitions for your work with TLE? 

HD: To get high ratings for my sets and models.

What do you hope the viewers get from your movies and photos? 

HD: I hope they can get more pleasure and more fantasies. It’s art and it has to be assessed. 

Is there anything else you would like to tell us? 

HD: I’m really glad that I work for TLE. It is a great experience, it is always nice to see my work on TLE, and I have many more ideas for my next work.

Charles Lakante: interview with a TLE artist

Director Charles Lakante recently undertook the most ambitious project to be seen on The Life Erotic – an intriguing ten-part series, ‘My Truth,’ that explores the dark erotic journey of sexually curious Assoli. Prior to this, Lakante was best known for some cleverly interwoven stories starring Alexis Brill and Camille A that hinted at his ability to create an ongoing narrative. Although a relative newcomer, the signs are good that Lakante is set to become a notable TLE artist, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to quiz him about his work…

Charles, where are you from?

CL: I am French. I grew up in a multicultural family even though I was almost the only multicultural part of it. I studied another field for my degree, traveled, lived and worked in different countries. I am now living not far from Hungary and Czech Republic, where I make my projects.

What is your background in photography and film?

CL: This work happened like a few other things that have come into my life: randomly. I edited landscapes for a contact, to a point where I came to produce my own footage (I still practice this activity, as I find it a great resource!). After some discussions with the same contact, and some personal reflection, erotica appeared to be something I could try out. There have been different steps, but my work with Alexis Brill and Camille A marks my true beginning as director – I am glad it happened on TLE.

Are you influenced by mainstream art, film and photography?

CL: I have a long answer to that question but I will choose the brief one. I am influenced and also not. To me, everything has been done in every artistic field, it is like jumping into a circle. With the way I think, I would do nothing by following influences. A piece of art from Edvard Munch, books from Henry Miller, Murakami, Celine, Barclay, Acker, Musso, Omi, Oates... even Coelho or Goleman, whatever the genre, I consider all of them art... I know I am going off the main point of your question, which is more directed; part of an answer would be to tell you that a few weeks ago I got back into Danish drama, and that is not an influence but clearly strengthens my vision for where to direct my next storylines and how to construct them (for fans of the genre who haven’t heard this yet, September 2015 is the comeback of ‘Saga’ and I heard that maybe in 10 years or so ‘Birgit’ could return). I work, function in life by associations, connections, it can be useful or restricting. I can have an idea and connect it with something I already thought of, something I saw, something that happened in my life... I am more bound by my own desires than any surrounding influences.

You have been shooting photosets and movies for TLE for almost a year – how do you think your style has evolved since then?

CL: I do not think that my style has evolved because I believe that I have not shown any specific style yet. It is easy for me to say why. I think that if you place one of my movies between a couple of others, unless you think about it you won't be able to define which one is mine. An example for everyone to follow my thought… I can recognize a Paul Black movie in a second, and I believe that it would be the same with Bo Llanberris. In this industry they are the only ones I could guess 10 out of 10, yet I saw only few movies from them. My style is not there yet; for various reasons I need to raise my standards to the level where I believe my “style” should stand. Once there, if it fulfils my initial wish I will continue and push it as much as I can, as much as I am given the chance to do. I do know when I should reach this point, and it is not so far from now. As for noticeable evolutions, my understanding of certain aspects of on set production for erotica is growing; of course communication with the MetArt Network is very pleasant, it is helping me to move forward.

Please tell us about your TLE series ‘My Truth.’

CL: ‘My Truth’ is led by a connection of ideas: to be, have, lose, get lost, stand up even if you are broken for good. In life we all are broken in a way, it doesn't mean we can’t put on a big smile, and do our best with everything we encounter. That is something I like to act on: so many things to do, so many things to experience, so many things to take (not get!). There is no message in my movies unless you know me personally, there is nothing that I feel you should or could understand. I think that movies are made to be yours, viewers make what they want, what they can or what they wish from it. The serial format is interesting, but in terms of work it changes nothing, because I do the same as I do for unique stories. I will not do it again soon though. I am far from satisfied with the series. I wanted to do something different; however the great thing about it was collaborating with Assoli, who held the storyline together the way it was needed to compensate for the missing parts of the script.

Do you prefer studio or location shoots?

CL: I have an idea of how studio work should be, and it requires design, a lot of it. If I can put up a set that makes sense within my concept of a movie I would like to give it a try. I see a boat lost in mist, a giant cage in the middle of a big studio... For now it is impossible, I am focusing on getting better results in locations.

Is there a photoset or video you are particularly proud of?

CL: I have a very strong opinion about the picture work I have made with my teams (a proud feeling is not part of it) and regarding videos, no I am not proud of any. I can tell you that when ‘Forgiveness’ was edited, playing it on my computer I understood that I can go where I want to go, but there is lot of work and effort to put in before I get there. I am up to it!

Do you prefer shooting movies or photographs?

CL: I think they require different approaches and so I would not be able at the moment to tell you if I prefer one to the other. I have identified many aspects to correct, and in addition to that, bit by bit, I am adding the planned enhancements to my scripts. I now consider myself to have one main weakness – I do not have my Ilona Black or Ariel Piper Fawn yet. I refer to an assistant on set who understands me, and can take care of the models while I focus on set up or technical aspects with my team. It is difficult for me to trust people (when it is work related) and I am not going to ask around for this type of position; I trust in the journey, and at some point this will be solved.

TLE is moving more towards ‘soft kink’ – is this a subject that inspires you?

CL: I do not consider this a subject, I think it is more like a requirement, like asking to put a red dress on every model. I had three thoughts before saying to the Network that I am fine with it: first, this is also coming with the requirement for darkness being dropped – this change of direction is what life brings you, life is change. My second thought was, this might be restrictive in term of creativity or situations. But my third thought was, requirements are just things that guide certain actions in my storyline. Even if you cannot see it as I see it, my only ‘muse’ so far is the story I want to develop, and this is not bound by any requirements, it only leads to certain adjustments.

Is there a model that inspires you the most?

CL: I have no particular model that inspires me, I guess it wouldn’t be a bad thing… I have ideas about a few of them, but no real things to base my reflection on or let my subconscious do the job. I believe that good models understand what they do, and some have the luck or interest to be a bit more than that. You can easily tell the difference. Malena Morgan, Elle Alexandra and Emily J are good examples of that, but they are not the only ones.

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?

CL: I prepare a lot. Maybe even too much – magazines, books, movies, music, series, blogs, life experience... I absorb much of it: a word, an idea, an expression here or there, most of the time it’s only for building the spirit of the shoot and letting my mind define things better as I divert myself. I first define my storyline and adapt my ‘research’ toward it. It varies, but my storylines take up a minimum of nine to 15 A4 pages; I barely use 20 percent of all the information I have noted in my preparations when shooting actually occurs. That is a shame, it’s due to the lack of time I have, I am running everywhere and it reflects on my footage quality – I will be glad when this is resolved. I want to use 80-90 percent of it; the rest is adaptation or evolution due to the day’s events.

What are your ambitions for your work with TLE?

CL: I have no ambitions; I have a plan and I consider it an opportunity if I can get to the end of it. Sooner or later stories end, sometimes earlier, sometimes later than we thought, but what matters is the present and not to waste time. When I prepare or think about shooting for TLE I give it my full attention – until the point when I will go live on an island, stay on the beach all day and enjoy it, and work won't be part of my life any more! I know from the start that this story will have a conclusion, we will see about the end when it is here.

What do you hope the viewers get from your movies and photos?

CL: I am going to repeat myself here – they should take what they want, can or wish from it. It belongs to them, in my approach once a movie is made I lose the ‘paternity’ and interest in it, I generally have very little interest in the past. It is like wondering about someone who does not feel the same, you waste your time, your energy, and you do not respect yourself because you do not prepare for the future in the way it deserves. Yet there is something very important to me related to the past, it is to transform the memory of bad things toward a cathartic reflection. I see it in two ways, either to learn from failures, redo things with the correct approach, or let them go because it is not in your DNA to deal with it; you are still doing something in both cases.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

CL: I should not but I think I will anyway! I will give a big thank you to the person who helped me decide to step up and produce my first footage. Her support was, “her support.” Plans change, but facts stand: Thank you! Big thank you to TLE for helping me, I will keep doing my best.

Paul Black: a unique talent discusses his creative process

What elevates a filmmaker to the status of ‘artist’? Is it creativity, innovation, inspiration? A certain disregard for convention and popularity? The ability to hold the viewer spellbound from the first frame to the last? Director Paul Black has all that, and much more. The maverick auteur, along with his wife and directing partner Ilona, produces the most unique, disturbing and darkly erotic movies I have ever seen – and they’ve got me hooked. They fascinate me, they unsettle me, and they make me feel dirty… in a good way!

I first interviewed Paul Black in December 2014 (you can see that interview here on the blog), and since then Paul, Ilona and their assistant have been busy settling into their new studio and shooting some amazing new movies for us. The gently humorous ‘Rainy Monday,’ the arresting imagery of ‘Short Circuit – Autumn Syndrome’ and the frankly mind-blowing ‘Lost’ have all hinted at new directions and a more complete realization of their vision; and in my opinion the stunning forthcoming release ‘Scarecrow’ is among their best yet, although naturally, perfectionist Paul is very critical about it! I was delighted to have the opportunity to ask him some more questions about their work…

Paul, how is the new studio working out? Last time we spoke, you were just settling in. Is it enabling you to shoot the kind of movies you want to make?

PB: We are still very busy at the studio. The primary objective is to create a stationary recording studio, which we currently don’t have, which makes the audio recording process even longer. At the moment Ilona and I are working on our latest movie footage, so we don’t come to the studio often. But our assistant works there, he builds new interiors for future movies, buys new props. We can’t fully use the studio yet and do what we really need in there – first of all to increase the scale of our movies, to step out of enclosed room spaces and predominant close ups. We need time to collect the necessary materials. The process is ongoing.

What draws you to the broken-down look of the sets you create? There is a feeling of poverty and deprivation – does this have a special meaning for you?

PB: We worked in this genre even before our first attempt at pornography and erotica. I personally learned to shoot using similar subjects. Same for Ilona, whom I didn’t know then – she did photography in this genre. This style is what brought us together. At the moment it is a part of our genre. Our love for vintage things is not accidental.  These objects have their own history and figuratively speaking, can talk. They are as much the actors, as the models are. Modern objects look quite ‘inexperienced’ on the shoot! Moreover – vintage pieces have interesting textures, which makes them look really good in the frame. Also we don’t see similar objects in everyday life. This fact alienates us from reality. I always liked art that is distant from reality. As an experiment I decided to use my original taste and experiences for erotica. ‘Inanimate objects’ are a big part of our films. In some cases they help to convey a sense of a scene, in others – to convey an atmosphere better. Besides, from the beginning we shot movies about quite simple people. There are not many glamorous women in expensive penthouses.

You seem to be moving away from the real-world situations of your earlier work into a more complete, and often disturbing, fantasy world – is this deliberate?

PB: I don’t entirely agree about the statement of my early work being based on real-world situations. If you look at my first experimental film ‘Sin Mirror’ on The Life Erotic, the story in this film is far from direct reality. It probably is similar to what we do now. The same goes for ‘Short Circuit’ and ‘Dark Water’ too. Everyday – as we call them – films (meaning ‘real life’) – get created from lack of time to write a good script, rather than from lack of time to build a good interior. When we started to shoot our movies in Czech Republic, we didn’t have an opportunity to shoot what we really wanted. And we were somewhat obliged to shoot ‘everyday, simple films.’ That was the reason we stopped going to Prague and started to develop the studio in Latvia. It’s hard to find the time and the money to build new interiors every week in a foreign country, in a strange town. That’s why it’s difficult to organize something bigger than just to shoot in a hotel room. Initially we worked in the genre of surrealism and we will keep developing this in future.

Your work is technically very complex. How much time is spent setting up a shot such as the swinging light bulb in ‘Short Circuit – Autumn Syndrome’? Is there a shot you are particularly proud of?

PB: Hmmm…Well, the swinging light bulb in ‘Short Circuit – Autumn Syndrome’ was not that difficult! But I think it took around 30 minutes, not because it was a lot of hard work, but because I shoot these types of frames slowly, without any rush, constantly fixing small details such as the angle, light, camera settings, speed and amplitude of the light bulb, as well as the flickering that should then match the pace of the music. Although, I think that no one else will notice these sorts of details, haha! I do it more for my own satisfaction. Sometimes the frames prove to be quite challenging and can take all night to shoot. But again, it’s not because it’s a grand shot or there is a lot of hard work involved, but rather because we simply have to experiment as we go, which always takes more time and is worse than if we were to work on these details theoretically. Other reasons are technical issues, lack of real professional shooting techniques and the necessary team. Sometimes it’s a lack of people and there is not enough technical equipment to shoot everything quickly and to a good standard. You asked about a shot I am particularly proud of – I don’t really know. We always strive to shoot every frame in a good way, as far as the time and technical means allow us. For more dynamic frames we need to completely change our equipment. I think I haven’t made my best frame yet!

You seem to be playing more with different genres of movie in your more recent work; there is a lot of black humor in ‘Scarecrow’ [coming soon to TLE] particularly. Are you inspired by comedies? Do you think people see the humor in your films?

PB: We would like to try other genres, but you need to know how to do a lot of things. It’s quite hard to add the same format in different genres. It is of course possible. But as I said – you need to know how to do it and if you do it, do it well or don’t do it at all. We have an experimental idea about almost a ‘musical’ movie, but we can’t take this on yet. It requires quite complex shooting, many people, dialog, shooting on location, symphony musicians. It’s a very difficult project for us now. We have a lot of ideas. But we need to be realistic. Our film ‘Scarecrow’ is of course a ‘joke from the author!’ Which, by the way, we aspire to continue. Initially we planned this as a series. It was an experimental version. For this we specifically built a ‘house for a scarecrow’ in the studio. The next version will be more atmospheric. Ilona and I both like dark English humor. We were raised watching ‘The Muppet Show’ and ‘Monty Python’! I think there is a place for humor in every movie we make. And there are people who understand it and there are people who only see it as ‘stupidity.’ In ‘Scarecrow’ we purposely made the humor very direct, so no one blames us for being ‘stupid!’

I find your work mood-altering – it stays with me for a long time after I watch it. Do you think your work takes on its own life after you release it? Do you have an idea of the effect you want it to have on the viewer?

PB: To be honest, we don’t really aim to ‘have an effect on our viewers.’ We just do what we want to do. Sometimes, when we read the criticisms about our movies being ‘non-erotic,’ we think about how we can improve that and pay more attention to the theme of ‘erotica.’ But when it has to do with the script or with an idea about a new film, our opinion changes. These films should be as they are. Otherwise, it will be ‘something else.’ There are enough people who can shoot regular erotica. Why would we do this? Our movies are ‘mood-altering.’ We don’t aim to please everyone, at all. We make them for ourselves, as it were. I’m more than certain that if we started to shoot movies just for everyone to like them, we wouldn’t be shooting erotica, we would work in another genre. We care about the fact that we, and the MetArt Network, like what we do. And we must say, MetArt gives us free rein.

Did anything specific inspire ‘Lost’?

PB: Everything was quite simple with the movie ‘Lost.’ We had an interior ready, but we had not yet written a script. Ilona and I couldn’t think of anything for a long time. The initial idea was very different. The model was meant to sleep in this place on a metal bed and the plot was quite simple, but we still didn’t like our idea. What we did is we took a photo of this place and stared at it together, lying on the sofa. And at some point we both came up with the same idea that it had to be a ghost, a phantom. She has to be standing still wearing a hospital gown. We both had the same idea at the same time and the script was done in one hour after that. What inspired ‘Scarecrow’?

PB: The initial script was written about a girl and a rubber doll. Quite a simple and everyday script in a simple home setting. I was writing the script all night and kept changing it, I couldn’t quite get it right and feel satisfied with it. And we needed the script to be written ASAP. I found the script quite unexciting, so I kept making it more and more complex. In the morning the script was ready, but I had one question – “where do we find a rubber doll in one day?!” I’m not a big specialist in the area of rubber dolls, so I decided to check out what kinds there are out there. I went on a sex shop website and was quite disappointed – the dolls looked quite bad! I had a different image in my head. Then I thought: “Why don’t we make a doll ourselves?” And if it’s not a rubber doll, it should certainly be ‘the scarecrow.’ I totally erased the script I wrote and we got on with making the scarecrow. Because of this, we had to postpone the shoot and then I wrote a new script that matched the scarecrow. Initially the face of the scarecrow was taken from my own face (we did the plaster mold). But plaster was not really a suitable material and the face turned out quite ugly! The arm of the scarecrow was molded from my hand though! Actually, the scarecrow itself is barely shown in this first movie. Many details didn’t make the cut. The second arm of the scarecrow (the one you don’t see in the movie) is kind of an adaptation from Tim Burton’s ‘Edward Scissorhands.’ That’s the reason we had the animation for the titles designed that way. Overall we thought the movie was quite unsuccessful and we wasted our time making the scarecrow, we didn’t quite pull off the atmosphere, the interior, didn’t quite work out the angles and lighting right. Moreover, the model was going to leave in the middle of the shoot to go back home to Prague! But we do aspire to continue this series. I think the next movie will be more about the initial idea and the scarecrow will shine in all its beauty!

You seem to create a sense of ritual when showing masturbation, for example the shaving brush and the jug of oil in ‘Short Circuit – Autumn Syndrome.’ Is ritual something that interests you?

PB: Probably they are rituals! But they are not planned, they come about unconsciously. Although our everyday life is quite ‘non-ritual’ – we sometimes sleep during the day and sometimes at night, we don’t always celebrate even our birthdays. We don’t follow any traditions or religions, so you can hardly say that I like rituals. Probably, rituals like us!

PB: Haha! The reason for that is possibly because the script for ‘Rainy Day’ was written by Ilona! Probably that’s why the orgasm is much softer than in my scripts. I like it when it properly smashes!

I know you are a perfectionist, but are you closer to being happy with your more recent movies? Do you have a film you are most proud of?

PB: The latest movies are done better than the older ones. But there are more emotions in the older films and the reason for that is the models. Lately we worked with Czech models: firstly, we don’t speak the same language, and secondly they are not used to starring in this kind of movie. I have not been satisfied with the quality of our movies for quite a while now. That’s due to outdated shooting equipment and we don’t have either the money or time to change it! We must achieve a new level of quality and make the shoots more complex. Static close ups that take up 90 percent of the whole movie are becoming quite unexciting. I’m not particularly proud of any movies, but I find ‘Red Vinyl’ [on SexArt] to be quite a successful one. It was all created by coincidence. A simple initial idea turned out to be quite a good story. But this success had its reasons – a local model, who spoke our language and who starred not only for the money.

What are your ambitions for your work with the MetArt Network?

PB: We have plenty of ambitions and goals. The primary thing is to fix productivity: to release more films. It’s profitable for us and for MetArt. But at the moment we can’t afford to release many films, as it’s just the three of us covering a vast amount of work. We didn’t have a good result from trying to get a team together and to rid ourselves from stuff like editing. I am very critical about small details and am ready to do everything myself until I find someone to whom I can pass on some work with peace of mind. We’ve had this issue from the very beginning. I can’t look at shooting films just as a way of earning money. It’s probably a big drawback of mine. I even tried to get rid of my perfectionism – in psychology they say it can be treated! But the more I thought about it the more I understood that I’m doing everything right. The issue of productivity needs to be dealt with not by getting rid of perfectionism, but rather by having a team full of perfectionists, professional and responsible people. I’m not ready to sacrifice the quality of movies for money. Otherwise, I’ll get tired of this job. In future I would like to develop a proper studio to be able to shoot more complex and interesting films. We’ve already started this process. Also in the future I would really love to shoot a different kind of movie with the financial support of MetArt – with a festival, game-oriented format.

Natasha, where are you from?

NS: I was born in Kiev, Ukraine.

What is your background in photography?

NS: I’m not a professional at all – I started shooting out of personal interest 15 years ago. At that time digital cameras didn’t exist and I found shooting on film to be a very complicated and uninteresting process. But when I first used a digital camera it all changed. I found it very interesting and since then I don’t want to do anything else! I learned how to use Photoshop and I do everything myself. But when I was a child I really enjoyed flipping through photography books and books with illustrations, and I think my love for art was there from when I was born.

What inspired you to start shooting erotica?

NS: I only work in the erotica genre. First I was shot myself by another photographer, and then I realized I didn’t enjoy modeling and decided to try shooting for myself. I also work on portfolios, but only occasionally, because I feel I have more freedom in the erotica genre and I choose the model myself. I also choose for myself where and how I will be photographing her, and that’s what I like about this job.

Are you influenced by mainstream art and photography?

NS: I often watch fashion channels and I read a lot of magazines. I also watch a lot of films and of course learn from professionals. I try my best!

Do you think being a woman shooting in this genre is an advantage?

NS: From one point of view it’s a big advantage to be a female photographer… girls trust me more and are not scared to come on set, and of course their loved ones are more at ease with it. But I also understand that girls can’t always show real passion in front of a woman.

You have been shooting photosets for TLE for almost four years – how do you think your style has evolved?

NS: It’s very hard for me to judge my own work, I’m always unhappy about something! I think that I have a long way to go until I reach perfection. But unfortunately I don’t have much time for that. My family takes up most of my time!

Do you prefer studio, location or outdoor shoots?

NS: I like shooting everywhere! The main thing is not to get stuck in one place. If I had more money I would take models to different countries all the time and shoot them there.

Is there a photoset you are most proud of?

NS: I’m not particularly proud of any whole set – I like some specific photos from different shoots, but there are not too many!

Would you ever consider shooting movies for us?

NS: I tried shooting movies, but I don’t think it’s my thing…

TLE is moving more towards ‘soft kink’ – is this something that inspires you?

NS: Yes, I like soft kink style!

Is there a model who most inspires you?

What are your ambitions for your work with TLE?

What do you hope the viewers get from your photos?

I want to show off all of the good sides that my models have, and hide their flaws. I don’t like vulgar photos at all… I think that’s not art anymore, and it can be done by any man... you don’t need to think too much about it or work too hard on it.

Russel Kor: interview with a TLE artist

Director Russel Kor has only five movies and accompanying photosets to date on TLE, but that small body of work makes a BIG impression. His refined skill in capturing female sensuality, his evocative use of music and his sophisticated visual storytelling make him one to watch. After seeing his new movie ‘I Do It Every Morning,’ earlier this month, I wanted to find out more about this intriguing artist, and he was kind enough to share some of his personal experience with us…

Russel, where are you from?

RK: I am originally from Berlin, Germany. My father is Bavarian, my mother is from Lviv, Ukraine. I finished school in Dusseldorf. As my parents worked in the embassy in Ukraine, I earned my director’s diploma in feature film in Kyiv [Kiev], Ukraine.

What is your background in the creative arts?

RK: Before going into film, I studied at the Fine Arts Academy, specializing in fifteenth century Flemish painting. In my film career, I started off shooting music videos and then commercials for various production houses, including DDB and Saatchi & Saatchi. I also worked for Warner Bros. on production sites as a production assistant, getting first-hand experience in how film production is conducted in Hollywood. I furthered my skills at Berlinale [the networking platform of the Berlin International Film Festival].

In my scripts I devoted a lot of attention to the woman and her sensual qualities. This became a natural transition to focusing on a broader category of adult movies. I shared my experience in shooting sensual erotic videos with Shaun, the Content Manager of TLE, who I consider the Godfather of my start in erotica. He supported my endeavor to work in the soft erotic genre and then encouraged me to explore the kink genre. Due to Shaun’s generosity in sharing his experience, TLE is my first platform for realizing my work; I work exclusively with the MetArt Network and hope to further develop my career here. I regard it as the best platform in the erotic industry. I discuss my creative visions with Shaun because for me, communication with such an expert is invaluable.

Are you influenced by mainstream art?

RK: I do my best to keep up to date with global art trends. I also try to be in the avant-garde, because the viewer is always looking for something new. I believe that the erotic industry, in this respect, is a very dynamic one. What has been amply used in the erotic industry, is only now entering mainstream film and gets high appreciation in international film festivals, for example ‘Nymphomaniac’ by Lars von Trier, and other films exploring girl-girl or boy-boy love. I believe that traditional, classical cinematography is moving in the direction of the sensual and erotic, with increasingly explicit scenes.

Do you have the music you want to use in mind when you shoot your movies?

RK: Yes, of course – as soon as the model enters the shooting scene. As I see her move in the first shots, I get the emotional tone and palette for the film. As I shoot scenes of orgasm – the last ones, when the model has totally opened up – I fully understand what kind of post-production will be used and what accents will be placed. Before shooting, I use the methods employed in traditional film – I meet with the model, we talk and have coffee, so there is an emotional bond created and then the shooting itself becomes a natural, intimate and smooth process, without any of the tension that is common on big shooting sites.

You have been shooting for TLE for a little over a year – how do you think your style has evolved since then?

RK: I think I have made huge progress since I started working with TLE. I hope my level in the erotic industry will improve every year and gain impetus. I hope to move to larger projects, like a full-length erotic movie, and a full feature erotic film for the traditional film industry, too. Even if it must be an 18+ release and given the restrictions that the traditional film industry imposes on sexual scenes, I still hope to create very sensually rich and emotional erotic movies. This is the direction I seek to focus on and exclusively explore in the future.

Do you plan your shoots in great detail, or see how it evolves on the day?

RK: I shoot on location only. I reflect life, with spontaneous modifications of scenes as the shooting goes on, improvising, adding, with flexible use of new sexual and sensual details. Because starting from the first shots and until the very last ones, I constantly modify and adjust the plot as I see how the model herself gets aroused, and how her mood changes, so I seek to convey this to the viewer in the best possible way. In general, I believe that spontaneity, impulsivity and improvisation are my alter ego. I believe this is the prerequisite and the precondition of my success, because this will allow me to be innovative and never repeat myself, finding new stories and directions.

Is there a movie you are particularly proud of?

RK: Yes, I like ‘Colored Beads’ and ‘Hot Strawberry’ a lot.

Do you prefer shooting movies or photographs?

RK: Films come first. This is a combination of the harmony of the video, audio, and color – this is very important for me. Photography comes second and it is very important, too – because my first education is in fine art. But my approach to photos is that they are few but very sensual.

TLE is moving more towards ‘soft kink’ – is this a subject that inspires you?

RK: Yes, of course. This just confirms my earlier words that the erotic industry – and TLE in particular – is in the avant-garde of developing and exploring new themes. I fully support the ideas of TLE, and films have to be increasingly sensual. The viewer does not want the technical sexual act per se, but seeks more intimate yet passion-charged story development and resolution.

Is there a model who inspires you the most?

RK: I like a few MetArt models very much – Kika, Ardelia and Vivian. They have an inner sensuality and potential that appeals to me. I would be happy to work with them. I also hope that this interview will be read not only by the members, but also by the models who already work or would like to work for the MetArt Network. I would be happy to work with the existing models as well as new models here.

What are your ambitions for your work with TLE?

RK: I hope that my growing experience, and my exclusive production for TLE, will be appreciated by the corporation’s leadership, and sooner or later I will get an exclusive offer and a check for $1,000,000... just kidding!

What do you hope the members get from your movies?

RK: I hope that the viewer will get from my films the most important thing – what he or she lacks in life, or what he or she would like to realize in life, but for some reason cannot. Anyway, what I do for the viewer should be a dramatic and a non-standard situation. I would like the viewer to become livelier and sexually unconstrained, and increasingly fantasizing after seeing my films. Everything is about sexual energy, the sexual river. Here for me, as an artist, it does not matter at all if these are traditional or non-traditional relations. It is only love that matters.

I would like to thank the big team – creative and administrative – who create, support and direct this wonderful site. For me as a director, it is very important to work on this site. I believe it is better to make small yet resolute steps exclusively on this site and contribute with my creative potential, especially since my work can only be seen on this site.

Maverick auteur Paul Black talks about shooting erotica for the MetArt Network

If you think you know erotica, Paul and Ilona Black’s work is a game-changer. Their movies are dark, unsettling, sometimes even nightmarish – a far cry from glossy generic porn, with its emphasis on artificial perfection. They’re the perfect fit for The Life Erotic, marrying powerfully arousing imagery with a truly unique flair for the provocative. I vividly remember the night I was introduced to the Blacks’ movies. I binged until I’d watched every single one I could find. I just couldn’t look away. I’d scarcely caught my breath before scribbling down a long list of questions I wanted to ask Paul Black about their creative process. Like his movies, his responses were at once challenging, contrary and darkly humourous. This is a man who couldn’t be predictable if he tried!

Paul, your movies have a dark, often psychologically disturbing feel. Has that always been present in your work, or has it developed over time?

Even though most of my life has been devoted to professional music, I have always considered myself an artist first; everything else – musician, operator, director – came second. As an artist I would categorise myself in the drama genre. For me, drama is one of the most powerful and vital trends in art. The psychological pressure that’s subconsciously in my movies is all the same thirst for drama. Of course, when filming erotica, any director is limited in artistic terms. As a rule, erotic videos (particularly modern, commercial ones) already have a well-established genre in which it’s difficult to make your own changes and not scare off the viewer. I started as a director and screenwriter in art house cinema, working in the genre of ‘psychological drama.’ That’s where I developed my style, which is partially seen in my films for the MetArt Network. When I first moved into erotica and hardcore, I decided I would shoot everything the same way I was shooting normal feature movies. Otherwise it wasn’t interesting for me. The first years of such experiments were fails. Everyone advised me to start shooting in the classic genre, but I continued to experiment, and listened to no one. In any movie, be it erotic or feature film, what is important to me is the atmosphere. It can be in any style, but it should evoke emotion. Of course, the combination of an explicit erotic story and a dramatic atmosphere can lead to something similar to the horror genre. I have no way to deeply immerse the viewer into the story, and so contrary to my wishes, the movie has only a surface atmosphere – like horror films. That’s why the viewer may feel the movies are dark and perhaps even negative. But it’s always a happy ending!

Where do you draw your inspiration from – movies, books, music, dreams?

When I realized that my calling was cinema, and not music (although I spent fourteen years in a music group) I immediately paid attention to the outstanding Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky. Before watching any of his movies, I realized that his point of view was similar to mine. I made that conclusion after reading one of his screenplays purely by chance, when I was learning how to write scripts. Just from his script, I felt the vibrant atmosphere of the movie, and I began to study the details of the scenes. Tarkovsky shot all of his movies in an exclusive, personally invented genre, which has not been used before him, and no one took up after his death. This is a unique director and unique genre. It’s uniqueness is in perfectionism. His every shot is a whole and well-designed work of art. In the words of Tarkovsky: “There are two basic categories of film directors. One consists of those who seek to imitate the world in which they live, the other of those who seek to create their own world.” I include myself in the second category. Let it be a crazy world – but my own. Of course, filming erotica in the genre of Andrei Tarkovsky isn’t in my ability range, and there’s just no need for it. But his world view has certainly left an imprint on me. Another director who is very different to Tarkovsky, but who also influenced my work, is David Lynch. If from Andrei Tarkovsky I studied the visual arts, then David Lynch attracted me with the psychological component to his work. They both created their own world! From the world of erotica, of course, Tinto Brass (although nowadays it’s difficult to watch without laughing).  I will say briefly about music: I love all good music. Genre doesn’t matter. I myself, am a former rock musician and have a bunch of favourite bands. But if we’re talking about most favourite, that would be classical music – Johann Sebastian Bach. Concerning books, I’m not a big reader (I’m too lazy to read). As for the inspiration for a movie, it can come from anywhere: images, dreams, thoughts, or even my own desires.

What genre of mainstream movie do you enjoy, and do you think this influences your erotic work?

Art-house cinema and auteur films. Mainly in the genre of drama. There are heaps of film makers who shoot good movies. It’s a pity that many of them aren’t known to the mass audience. As for purely commercial Hollywood cinema, I am indifferent to it. I don’t mind these movies and I think they are necessary and often watch them myself, but it is like, ‘watch and forget.’ But the auteur films definitely affect my work and even my outlook on life. This is why these movies exist – changing lives for the better.

What drew you to shooting erotica?

I started with feature films, nothing erotic. In my first experiment, I got straight into the professional field of cinematographers, which I didn’t expect. As an amateur dreamer, I immediately got the role of a director of a large project with the support of Riga Film Studio and a branch of the company Universal: a professional film crew, honoured artists from the former Soviet Union, plenty of legal issues – and a lot of haemorrhoids! This project got into the International Moscow Film Festival right away – the first project which got to a festival of this level since the collapse of the Soviet Union. So the local film makers took me seriously immediately. Into erotica I came after the silver screen showed me its teeth. Luck turned away. I didn’t finish my own movie. The crew ran off. There were a lot of reasons – one of them funding. There weren’t enough funds to make the movie the way I wanted to. So I thought it’s better not to make a movie at all rather than make a bad movie. And I didn’t have enough experience at that time. That’s the reason I came to erotica. I’ll spend ten years shooting erotica in a cinematic genre, will gain experience and then come back to the big screen. This is what I’m doing now.

Your ideas are often quite bold and challenging. Are you a non-conformist in other areas of your life, or do you channel it all into your work?

My main world view, I put together as a child. I’m not one of those people who often changes their outlook or opinion. I add to it with age, but the key points remain the same! As for society, I never understood it and it never understood me. But over the years I got used to it and I can’t say that it disturbs me. There’s a small number of people with whom I’m interested in spending time and they understand me, and that’s enough for me. At work and in my personal life I’m the same, everything is intertwined. For the majority of people in my homeland, I’m probably more abnormal than normal. But I think that the problem isn’t in me. I live in peace with my conscience, I prefer to tell people the truth and not be a hypocrite. But the truth is not always pleasant to people who are used to having a slaves’ outlook in the seventy years of total control of the population of the USSR. The Soviet Union is long gone, but the society in which I live is still steeped in the values – that are not actually values, from a logical point of view. Yes, I am a person that doesn’t recognize traditions, manners of a society or period. I live only on common sense and my life in the twenty-first century. And I don’t bother anyone. But my society claims that I do. I live in Europe, but where there are European values it’s bad for most people. So I swim against the tide in my personal life and at work and I’m not afraid. As sung in one song, “Do not cave in under the changing world, it’s better the world will bend under us!”

Does your Latvian heritage influence your work?

“Latvian heritage” isn’t really the right question. I was born in the Soviet Union, in the Latvian SSR. Latvia under the Soviet Union and independent Latvia are two different things. Independent Latvia has only existed for a very short period of time, and honestly, it’s doing very, very badly. I don’t even know whether there is a “Latvian heritage,” I know nothing about it. Good movies in independent Latvia aren’t made, good music either. Latvia doesn’t have time for creativity! But if we talk about the Soviet Latvia, then, of course, there were good movies and good music. But it can hardly be called Latvian heritage. It’s a Soviet legacy, which is closely linked with Russia. It’s the Soviet legacy that, of course, affected me and my work. For example Andrei Tarkovsky, before he left to live in Europe, began his career in the Soviet Union. And his most successful films were made in the USSR. Despite the fact that I don’t like totalitarian government and I love freedom, I am proud of the Soviet Union. I think that it’s the best thing that has happened to Russia. The USSR was unique, though with a lot of drawbacks. Soviet movies were totally different from American films, and this was their advantage. It had its own style. I still with great pleasure watch these old Soviet movies. As for the new Russian cinema, I’m completely indifferent! It’s the same as American films, but poorly made due to low budgets.

Your studio is quite unique and fascinating – how do you create its look?

We try to make all props with our own hands, that’s the only way to make them as planned. We have enough experience in creating interiors from our own ideas. Over the years, we have mastered a lot of professions: from welding to tailoring, from electrical engineering to decorating. The basic experience, I personally got in the construction of scenery for my feature film project. It’s simple, when you’re interested – you do everything step by step, piece by piece, and most importantly, think it all through. Sometimes it’s better to think more, than to do. We gained a lot of experience on the BDSM porn project. We had quite a big team, and the project was very large. All the devices and props were made with our hands. We had our own engineer and electrician. I myself learned a bunch of crafts: welding, blacksmithing, carpentry, and others. It was on this project that I met Ilona, who was invited as a photographer. That’s where we got the idea to work together, even after the end of the project. In recent years, it was mainly just the two of us working together. And, of course, we are very limited in artistic and technical capabilities. But recently we decided to go back to the larger shoot: recruiting a team, developing our studio, in which we are going to build interiors, we’re buying antiques and other props. Generally moving to a new, more complex and large-scale stage, like in cinema.

Do you work with a prop builder or do you like to do all the work yourself?

At the moment there are three of us working. Me, Ilona and a technical assistant. Our technical assistant also has a variety of professions, including construction. But everything is done by the three of us. I am very demanding about details and hard to please. So I try to participate in all aspects of preparation and shooting. Otherwise, I’ll start redoing everything! Anyway, the director simply must take part in everything. We’re not making movies large enough for me not to have time for the construction or selection of clothes. If there’s time, it’s better to do everything yourself. So the three of us are carpenters, tailors, painters, designers and porters!

Can you tell us more about the studio?

It’s 300 square meters, which is necessary for the construction of large sets for our ideas. It’s very difficult to work in ready-made interiors. The search for them takes a lot of time, and it’s almost impossible to find a finished interior which exactly meets our artistic requirements. I’m not even talking about the convenience of interior lighting and other technical details that can only be realized in a stationary position. That’s why big movies are shot on studio sets. Shooting erotica in similar hotels, that all look the same, saddens us. Yes, you have to work less, but the result should be more important than laziness. We don’t have any special story ideas at the moment. The studio solves the issues with the interior, and the plot ideas come and go. We do have plans that include an idea of a mini series in the genre of steampunk. Those who know this genre, will understand how difficult it is from a visual standpoint and how hard it will be to work on the decor. With respect to the storyline, there are several options, but we are still thinking about it. Perhaps it will be a series associated with various sex machines. But I know for sure – erotica in this genre has never been done before!

How do you plan and script your shoots?

Before each shoot we write a detailed scenario. Every frame, every action, every emotion of the model, sound and light is clearly written in the script in advance. Usually a script for a movie is five pages of A4, about five scenes and seventy main frames. Improvisation is permissible only in the last scene. Prior to that, the model does what is written in the script. There I’m an uncompromising man. If the model isn’t getting it right, then we shoot take after take until she gets it. Ninety-nine percent of the models on our shoots end up in a state of shock. Since they are not used to working with such scenarios, it takes a very long time to get used to this way of filming – many run away from the shoot. I only feel the artistic emotion when writing a script. During the filming, it’s purely technical work.

You specialise in the ‘short, sharp shock’ for SexArt and The Life Erotic – very complex ideas explored in a very brief time frame. Any plans to shoot some longer stories, or do you prefer just to tease us?

Heh! I don’t believe that the length of the frames in our films are ‘short’ or ‘prolonged.’ The frame shows exactly as much as it was created to show. The duration of the movies isn’t long. If you take a big movie, which lasts one and a half hours on average, you can show a whole life. And in our movies we have only one scene – masturbation. Why stretch it? I would make it even shorter, about five minutes. That’s enough to see the process even wrapped in a movie wrapper. I’m also a big opponent of the view that when shots change rapidly, it’s impossible to see something. Something is still possible? That’s what I want the audience to see. It’s not a static image, which you can watch as much as you wish. Films are vivid pictures and frames. Put together, they give an overall picture of what is happening, even if they change frequently. Take any Hollywood movie, there is a frequent change of frames, and to me personally, everything is clear. Although there are those who complain about this, they say, “too fast, nothing is clear, too dark.” Reminds me of my grandmother, when she first saw a clip of Michael Jackson: “Oh, everything is so fast that nothing is clear.” But she’s a grandmother and saw it for the first time, so it’s forgivable. She just has to watch carefully and train the brain for quicker analysis! The twenty-first century is the century of speed! I don’t think that the process of masturbation is very different from a similar scene in the cinema, and there it’s lively and concise. It’s old school, that the frame should last at least five seconds.

Is there a SexArt or The Life Erotic movie that you are most proud of?

Most likely not. I would say that there are bad movies, and movies that are more or less okay. I’m always unhappy with the result. I’m like that. To make a film, showing the most of our abilities, we need other opportunities that we don’t have. It’s time, technical possibilities and other circumstances. At the moment, we do things based on our capabilities, rather than abilities. My idea of a good movie, which I can be proud of, is levels higher – by all indicators – from what we are doing now. That’s why now we decided to move to another, more challenging phase of filming. Let’s see what we will turn out. But for now I’m still not happy with the result. For that, I’m not liked by models and sometimes the team. Nobody will ever hear praise from me...

Which movie was the most challenging to shoot?

It’s difficult to answer this question. Each film is unique and each has unique difficulties. I’ll reveal a secret – the atmosphere at our shoots is horrible! I’m a very demanding and also nervous person on the set. Any of our shoots is a mini stress for everyone. Therefore, no one loves the process of filming, and many models absolutely don’t want to work with us. Everybody likes it when it’s finished. Working with models is difficult for our genre. Not all models quickly get into the heart of the process. Not everyone can act. Not all understand what’s happening. I don’t know how other people shoot and how they manage to keep calm, but our shoots take place in a very nervewracking atmosphere. First of all, the models can’t always do what we need them to do – it’s very rare that they can. Second, we have a lot of technical difficulties, which – as far as I can judge – others don’t. We simply don’t have enough hands to work properly. I’m also very demanding about details, pedantic, in fact. We spend a lot of time and effort on things that it is quite possible no one will even notice, but if they are noticed, then it will only be by someone who understands such things. But I can’t decide for other people, “will they notice or not?” We must always do everything perfectly, as if for ourselves.

Do you have a muse – a model who particularly inspires you?

I think not. Of all the models I’ve shot, I haven’t yet found one that would be one hundred percent right for our genre. It’s not models that we need, but actresses. But, actresses don’t film in such frank erotica. The model that best copes with the tasks is Raeah. Usually, with her, the shooting takes place with minimal conflict! And, of course, if everyone played and understood the process of filming like Emily, then the level of shooting would be much higher. But Emily isn’t a ‘model.’

Does it take a particular kind of model to rise to the challenge – you are asking them to do so much more than just look pretty?

Ha ha ha!!! For the models we’re a silent (or loud) horror! There hasn’t been a single model that didn’t say something like, “I’m shocked, I didn’t think it would be so difficult! I wasn’t warned that this was such a nightmare, I want to go home... ” They all say roughly the same thing: “No one shoots such complex scenarios. Nobody takes that long. No one takes so many plans, takes, parts, bottles, buttons, and so on. ” They don’t understand why we shoot an orgasm ten times. Why it’s necessary before each shot, to stay still in the correct position and analyse the previous frame. Why are we constantly managing props, light, focus. Why they can’t move after each frame. Models get a good lesson and remember our shoots for a long time. For the next director who will be filming her after us, it’ll be much easier to work with the model. But in the beginning, they’re all spoiled and capricious. But after five hours of filming, they  begin to understand that nothing will be over, unless they do what’s asked of them. Some even run away!

How do you get the model into character?

Any emotion on her face is thought through and written by me, up to the point of me rehearsing it in front of a mirror. Another thing is that often the model can’t repeat fifty percent of what is written in the script, and instead of getting  the correct emotions, I get something else. But I’m sure that if I don’t demand the maximum, then I won’t even get a minimum. So I always fill the script with complicated things. Often the models have gloomy emotions, and it’s their actual real emotions. As I said, we have a gloomy atmosphere on set and models have a similar emotional outcome. Our models more often cry than smile. I used to try to be patient, but then realized that this tolerance to the models reflected badly in the movies. I’d rather have the models hate me, than make a movie where the models act like in a porno, restrain smiles, look into the camera, and so on.

Yourself and your wife Ilona obviously share a powerful creative vision – do you find yourselves discussing shots over the dinner table?

Ilona is the second director, and from scripting to the last stages of working in the recording studio, we do everything together. Also many scenarios and ideas are fully owned by Ilona. The only division of responsibilities occurs during the assembly of the film and photo processing. Everything else we do and come up with together. Yes, of course, we often talk about the shoots. It also happens in the middle of the night. It may occur during lunch and in the bathroom and even during a visit to my family or friends. It’s an essential part of our lives and all of our loved ones are up to date about it.

Has Ilona influenced your portrayal of women on film?

No, I don’t think so. Images of the models in the films aren’t really worked through. We want to correct this situation and begin to pay more attention to it. Before, often, the appearance of the model didn’t correspond with the film. But, of course, there’s a common style and understanding of how the model should look in our movies. The key aspect here is simplicity! The most frequent difficulty lies in the fact that the model is too glamorous, and we have to wash the whole thing off to somehow infuse her into our film. But sometimes there’s just not enough time.

What do you hope your viewers get from your movies?

I still don’t know what the audience wants. First of all, the audience is diverse. One needs one thing, another something else. Someone will say they got  aesthetic pleasure from our movies, and the other will grumble that they didn’t have time to see something there. But, of course, I have an idea of what type of audience will understand our films. If a person has an aesthetic artistic taste, they will appreciate and understand our films at least from that point of view. If a person is just in need of an orgasm, it’s unlikely. It’s probably almost impossible to masturbate to our films – I wouldn’t be able to! But there’s porn for that. Our movies are for careful reviewing by certain people – and such people do exist, I know.

Naked art lovers explore gallery without constraints!

Art lovers at the National Gallery of Australia have been given the unique opportunity to experience an after-hours tour in the nude. Contemporary artist Stuart Ringholt hosted the event, which was intended to “remove the material barrier between artist and audience.” Participants said being naked changed their perspective, removing distractions and enabling them to focus more fully on what they were experiencing.

The tours were conducted in groups of 50 adults, who removed their clothes before viewing the works of James Turrell, an American artist who works with colored light, holograms, prints and photographs. According to Ringholt, “I believe that many of his works are best suited to the nude viewer, because your whole body can partake in a color experience… He has a room which is called the Gansfield room. It’s colored light and it was really quite beautiful to see people exit. In a space of just a second people moved through four different skin color hues. Their bodies changed radically.”

    There is a definite progression that can be percieved on this film. Apparently Daiga starts to feel good about her roles. The music was a very good addition to the concept of the movie.
